The masterpieces of Jacopo Tintoretto and Francesco Pianta, a triumph of magnificence and religious devotion
Located next to the church dedicated to St Roche, the saint to whom Venice made her vow during the outbreak of plague in the 15th century, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, headquarters of the confraternity of the same name, was founded by rich Venetian merchants in 1478 and enjoyed particular prosperity in the early 16th century. Today it is famous especially for the celebrated pictorial cycle by Jacopo Tintoretto, who between 1564 and 1578 painted for three of the Scuola’s rooms a series of canvases with scenes of the Old and New Testament. No less spectacular is the magnificent choir carved by Francesco Pianta with a series of allegorical figures of great expressive power.
