The beautiful art of the Byzantine court, with its religious feeling and its power
The Mausoleum built for herself by Galla Placidia , but in which she was probably never buried, is a jewel of fifth-century art. It bears remarkable witness to the culture of imperial Ravenna and to the growing importance of Christian faith and thought in an age of terror and uncertainty.
In this volume the Mausoleum appears in all the splendour and complex symbolism of its mosaics, from the triumph of the Good Shepherd robed in ceremonial garments to the refulgent visions of the Apocalypse.
