The greatest artists of the Florentine Renaissance give life to a masterpiece of architecture and sculpture
Orsanmichele, the extraordinary structure built as a granary in the garden dedicated to St Michael between the Cathedral and Palazzo Vecchio, is now a Museum to itself. As a Museum it gathers together some of the supreme sculptural masterpieces of the Florentine Renaissance, when Donatello and Ghiberti, Brunelleschi and Nanni di Banco, Andrea Verrocchio and Orcagna adorned with statues the tabernacles set up on the exterior walls by the city Guilds, and when great painters frescoed the interior in accordance with an iconographic scheme devised by Franco Sacchetti.
This is an extraordinary ensemble of masterpieces unique in Italian art, and including the celebrated Tabernacle of the Virgin by Andrea Orcagna – a magnificent architectural confection in sculptural form.
