The grace, elegance and imagination of renaissance Rome
Built in the early 16th century for Agostino Chigi, the rich Sienese banker and patron, the Villa Farnesina in Rome is one of the noblest and most harmonious creations of the Italian Renaissance, a work in which the architecture and the painted decoration fuse into a unique and marvellous synthesis. The sober spatial and volumetric articulation of the Villa, designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi, is the perfect setting for the rich painted decoration of the interior, frescoed by Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo, Giovanni Antonio Bazzi known as Sodoma, and by Peruzzi himself. Among the various pictorial cycles, outstanding is the Loggia of Cupid and Psyche, with its ceiling frescoed by Raphael and his workshop with scenes taken from the celebrated fable by Apuleius.
