The renaissance residence of a great family, with the intriguing fascination of its frescoes

OVERVIEW

“Schivar la noia” [escape boredom]. It was with this purpose that in the late 14th century, at the command of Alberto V d’Este, there was built in Ferrara a residence intended for the recreation and delight of the city’s rulers. Enlarged in the subsequent decades, the Palazzo Schifanoia was provided during the rule of Borso d’Este with a large ceremonial hall, the Salone dei Mesi, frescoed between 1469 and 1470 by the great masters of the Ferrarese school: Cosmé Tura, Francesco del Cossa and Ercole de’ Roberti. It is a cycle that for its artistic quality, and for the richness of its references to the neoplatonic culture of the time, remains one of the noblest and most original examples of Italian renaissance art. This 14th volume of the series “Mirabilia Italia”, published on the occasion of the exhibition that in the autumn of 2007 celebrated the splendours of Borso’s rule, illustrates and describes with an exhaustive photographic campaign and full historico-critical apparati, not only the celebrated cycle of the Months, recently restored, but also all the other rooms of the Palazzo and its numerous works of art.
